Hill Tandem Flight

Tandem paragliding is a good way to check out the sport. An introductory tandem flight lets you experience high-flying without having to spend several days preparing at the training hill.

We use a larger canopy designed for two, thepassenger is seated in front of the instructor in a very comfortable harness. This allows full unobstructed views of the flight, and access to all flight controls. The passenger may even get to fly the glider themselves.

This sport is VERY WEATHER DEPENDENT in other words to be safe we only operate these gliders in suitable weather conditions ie. steady light winds (15/20kmph) and dry weather.

History of Paragliding

Paragliding began with skydivers who were curious enough to try to fly their parachutes from high mountainous areas, it worked alright but the glide angle was very poor. In the 1980s in Europe, mainly in the Alps, a small group of pilots carrying their ram air parachutes over their shoulders joined the local Hangglider pilots.

These parachutes had a glide ratio of about 2:1 and were very porous as they were designed for skydiving and needed to allow for the initial shock when deployed at 10,000 ft, as a non porous material would explode once deployed in those circumstances.

Pilots soon discovered that non-porous material was the way to go and this pointed to success. A paraglider is a soft wing and is not to be confused with a parachute. A paraglider allows us to glide through the air and not descend vertically in the way a parachute does. The paraglider is controlled by pilot input only and is based mainly on pilot skill to stay airborne. Soon paraglider manufacturers started to pop-up here and there and the sport finally got off the ground.

About Our IPPHA Syllabus Courses

Is there a age and weight limit?

Yes, you must be aged over 16. Although there is no upper age limit, we advise anyone in an older age bracket to visit their doctor for a health check - remember there is a reasonable amount of exercise required to keep walking back up the hill! Maximum weight is around 120kgs.

Do you have to be fit?

You will need a basic level of fitness and be in good health (i.e. no problems with bones, knees and backs). This is an adventure sport in the country side with an attached risk, broadly on par with skiing. When you fly down the slope, you will need to walk back up perhaps up to 8-10 times in one day. Unsure! consult your doctor or ask us.

When should I check for weather updates?

If you telephone after 21.30hrs the night before your course starts, we will give you a weather update and confirm that it may be flyable the next day.

What are the legalities of paramotor training in Ireland?

Because we use the IPPHA (IAA accepted) syllabus, our instructors, pilots and students can all access insurance which is necessary to fly legally. All our students can then train and fly legally under our supervision in Ireland, prior to applying for an IAA exemption.

When should I apply for my paramotoring exemption?

On completeing your training at a school that is accepted by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) you can apply for an exemption (Licence), making sure that your logbook is up to date, that you have an official school training record of training with school stamp, a current class 2 medical cert and insurance cover. (We are the only school in Ireland at present that has authority to instruct students in this activity in the ROI).

Do I have to take my course all in one go?

No, you can take it over different days or weekends, as long as you complete it within six months. It is better to complete it over a short period as then you do not regress in your training.

We ask students to put in a special effort to train week days as training weather is limited and it is not possible to book in everyone for weekend training!
